3 Essential ChatGPT Habits Every Doctor Should Master

If you’ve been using ChatGPT for a while, you might feel like it’s a helpful assistant but not quite the “game-changer” you’d hoped for.

Maybe it’s providing “okay” answers but not really something more, and you’re not sure what to do differently. Don’t lose hope, imagine ChatGPT as a scalpel in your hands as a doctor—it is incredibly useful when you master the art of how to use it.

Here are three simple habits to help you get the most out of ChatGPT, be it diagnosing medical cases, making content, or planning your next big idea outside of medicine. Let’s get to it!

Note: While these are general suggestions, it’s important to conduct thorough research and due diligence when selecting AI tools. We do not endorse or promote any specific AI tools mentioned here.

Habit 1: Use it Frequently (Even on Small Things).

Using ChatGPT efficiently is a skill. You get better at knowing what questions it can answer and how to frame those questions for the best responses with the more you use it. It’s like building up muscle memory-you get better at doing things just from working with it.

Personally I treat it like Google or Siri, anything I’m curious about or need quick answers from I just use it.

Why This Helps:

  • Sharper Questions, Better Answers: Regular use helps you figure out how to phrase things to get exactly what you need.
  • Recognizing Patterns: You’ll start to see how it handles different types of problems, which makes it easier to know what to expect.
  • Staying Up-to-Date: ChatGPT gets updated all the time. Regular use means you’re always familiar with its newest features.

How to Start:

Even if you’re busy, try weaving ChatGPT into your day. For example, use it to brainstorm ideas for patient education materials, draft an email, or even come up with dinner ideas when you’re off duty. Over time, you’ll find it feels less like a tool and more like a reliable assistant.

Habit 2: Be Clear and Specific

If you have ever provided vague instructions to a colleague and received a mediocre outcome, then you know the importance of clarity. The same is true of ChatGPT. The more specific you are, the better it will do. Think about it like discharge instructions to a patient-the clearer you are, the more likely they will do it successfully.

But then you might ask “Well I want quick answers and I can’t go into very detail“. And that’s a fair question. What we want in the end is convenience not a “child” you teach every time.

There’s no perfect answer to this, but looking back to experience it boils down to 3 things:

  • You’ll spend more time adding details if you weren’t clear at the start
  • You’ll ask the same question again if you don’t like the first response
  • You’ll go use another tool instead (Google) and spend more time

So, how do you counter this? On your first ask, it should fill at least 3 very important parts in the structure of a prompt: role, task, and format.

Why This Helps:

  • Saves Time: Precise questions mean fewer follow-ups or rephrasing.
  • Tailored Responses: Specific prompts allow ChatGPT to give you exactly what you’re looking for.
  • Consistent Results: When you’re clear, you can replicate your success with similar prompts later.

How to Start:

When asking ChatGPT for help, include all the context it needs. For example:

  • Instead of saying, “Tell me about diabetes,” try, “Act as a medical researcher and summarize the latest guidelines on managing type 2 diabetes in adults, focusing on lifestyle interventions
  • If you’re outside of medicine, say you’re writing a post or a caption, specify the tone and audience: “Take the role of a writer and create a friendly post about the benefits of mindfulness for busy professionals, targeting a general audience.

Habit 3: Experiment and Have Fun

One of the best things about ChatGPT is how flexible it is. It’s not just for work—it can help with creative projects, planning trips, or even learning a new hobby. By experimenting with different prompts and scenarios, you’ll start to see just how much it can do.

Why This Helps:

  • Encourages Creativity: Trying new things can spark ideas you might not have thought of.
  • Breaks Monotony: Using ChatGPT for fun or out-of-the-box tasks can make it feel less like work.
  • Uncovers Hidden Features: You’ll discover capabilities you didn’t even know it had.

How to Start:

Play around with ChatGPT when you have downtime. For example:

  • Ask it to rewrite a patient handout in simpler language for better health literacy.
  • Use it to plan a vacation itinerary or generate gift ideas.
  • Experiment with fun prompts like “Tell me a bedtime story about a doctor who discovers a magical stethoscope.”
