At the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled a revolutionary new AI system called Apple Intelligence.

This exciting development promises to transform the way you interact with your Apple devices. Unlike standalone AI assistants, Apple Intelligence seamlessly integrates with your existing Apple ecosystem, including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

Now, what does it mean for us users? Is this an exciting addition or another innovation we should reconsider? Let’s break down what happened in WWDC 2024 and see what Apple promises in their upcoming IOS 18.

Table of Contents

“AI” Stands for Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is a new AI system from Apple that will be available on some of their latest devices. If you want to know if it will be available on your device, you can click here to check.

In its initial release, Apple Intelligence offers three main features: language, images, and action.

Language Features

Apple Intelligence empowers you to become better at written communication. Features like “Rewrite” and “Proofread” act as your personal writing assistants, suggesting improvements to enhance clarity, conciseness, and professionalism in your writing. It can also summarize text and emails, and create transcripts of recordings.

Stuck summarizing a lengthy email? Apple Intelligence can condense it for you. Need to capture the essence of a meeting recording? It can transcribe it in a flash.

Image Features

Of course, what is the iPhone without amazing images? You can now unleash your inner artist with “Image Playground,” a tool that lets you generate images based on descriptions or from people in your Photos library.

You can also have your own custom emojis. Use “Genmoji” to generate emojis from text prompts or photos. And lastly, “Image Wand” to create images based on sketches or text in your Notes app.

The Photos app is also getting some AI features, such as the ability to create Memory Movies and search for specific photos.

Action Features:

Siri, your trusty virtual assistant, gets a significant boost with Apple Intelligence. It has a new look and can now understand context better than ever before.

You can type your requests to Siri, and it can help you explain how to do certain functions on your phone. Siri can also understand what is on the screen when you activate it, so you can ask it to take actions based on what you’re seeing.

Apple Intelligence also integrates with OpenAI’s ChatGPT to power some features, such as generating summaries of documents and creating original images and text.

The interface boasts a more conversational approach, making interactions feel natural and intuitive.

Apple in Collaboration with OpenAI

Apple has partnered with OpenAI, the company behind the powerful ChatGPT technology.

This collaboration elevates Apple Intelligence’s capabilities, particularly in areas like generating summaries of complex documents and crafting original text formats. It’s a testament to the growing power of ChatGPT and Apple’s willingness to leverage external expertise for the benefit of its users.

But of course, there are concerns…

Privacy remains a top priority for Apple, and it hopefully shows. Apple Intelligence prioritizes user security by processing data on-device whenever possible. For tasks that require cloud-based processing, anonymization ensures your personal information remains protected.

Here are a few takeaways from their collaboration:

  • The new AI system is focused on privacy, with most processes happening on the device itself.
  • External computing would utilize a secure method called a private cloud computer.
  • It would require user permission for requests shared with OpenAI.
